Violent internet porn to be banned in Britain

The British government is set to propose a plan that will see the total banning of violent Internet pornography. If the legislation goes through, it will be the first of its kind in any Western country, according to a Cabinet minister. …

The legislation proposes to ban the possession of images that show sexual activity with a human corpse or animal, serious sexual violence, or serious violence in a sexual context. The legislation was announced by Home Office Minister Paul Goggins. …

Goggins said: “We know from that particular case, the horrendous case of Jane Longhurst, who was brutally murdered by Graham Coutts, that these images do have an impact, do feed the fantasies in certain individuals.”

Okay, other than the fact that politicians (yet again) can’t tell the difference between fantasy and reality, I have two serious questions about this:

  1. Why specifically Internet pornography? Is that somehow more prone to cause normal people to go on killing rampages that old-fashioned printed or videotaped porn?
  2. How, exactly, do they propose to enforce this? Banning child-porn (which is to say, pornography that features actual, live children) is one thing: pretty much every sane person on Earth considers that repugnant, and you have to scrape the nastiest, darkest bottom of the barrel if you want to find someone willing to host that kind of filth. But pornography that features adults, in which the participants are consenting, voluntary participants? You won’t have too much trouble finding a web host for that, particularly if there’s no visible “blood” involved. Having “blood” (fake blood, of course) in the same frame as graphic sexual activity does tend to cause difficulties, even if the acts being performed are obviously not real and intended as a spoof. Which must make it really difficult for people who want to create vampire-themed pornography. (Not that I would know anything about that, of course — I’m merely speculating.)

On the face of it, this is simply a stupid idea. But hey, at least it distracts from the bombings. Say, is it my imagination, or is Britain turning into Brazil?
