(Or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.askvg.com\/how-to-remove-favorites-from-windows-7-explorers-navigation-pane\/\">hide favorites<\/a>, but you certainly do not need both.)<\/del> (I changed my mind about this. I actually do use both.)<\/li>\n<li>Make your local network a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenforums.com\/tutorials\/43629-network-location-set-home-work-public-network.html\">Work network<\/a> (or just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.askvg.com\/how-to-remove-homegroup-from-windows-7-explorers-navigation-pane\/\">hide Homegroup<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Open Windows Explorer, click the &#8220;Organize&#8221; button, and select &#8220;Folder and Search options&#8221;.\n<ol>\n<li>On the &#8220;General&#8221; tab&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Show all folders: not checked<\/li>\n<li>Automatically expand: checked<\/li>\n<li>On the &#8220;View&#8221; tab&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Always show icons: not checked.<\/li>\n<li>Always show menus: checked.<\/li>\n<li>Display file icon: checked.<\/li>\n<li>Display file size: checked.<\/li>\n<li>Display the full path: checked.<\/li>\n<li>Hidden files and folders: Don&#8217;t show (we will do something about this further down).<\/li>\n<li>Hide empty drives: not checked.<\/li>\n<li>Hide extensions: not checked (this is the most idiotic option ever).<\/li>\n<li>Hide protected OS files: not checked.<\/li>\n<li>Launch folder windows in a separate process: not checked.<\/li>\n<li>Restore previous folders: checked.<\/li>\n<li>Show drive letters: checked.<\/li>\n<li>Show encrypted: checked.<\/li>\n<li>Show pop-up: checked.<\/li>\n<li>Show preview handlers: checked.<\/li>\n<li>Use check boxes to select: not checked.<\/li>\n<li>Use Sharing Wizard: checked.<\/li>\n<li>When typing into list view: Select the typed item.<\/li>\n<li>Click the &#8220;Apply To Folders&#8221; button, and click OK.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Configure My Documents.\n<ul>\n<li>In Windows Explorer, navigate to &#8220;C:\\Users\\[your user name]&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click &#8220;My Documents&#8221;, and rename it to &#8220;Documents&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click &#8220;My Music&#8221;, and rename it to &#8220;Music&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click &#8220;My Pictures&#8221;, and rename it to &#8220;Images&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click &#8220;My Videos&#8221;, and rename it to &#8220;Videos&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Drag and drop &#8220;Music&#8221; into the &#8220;Documents&#8221; folder.<\/li>\n<li>Drag and drop &#8220;Pictures&#8221; into the &#8220;Documents&#8221; folder.<\/li>\n<li>Drag and drop &#8220;Videos&#8221; into the &#8220;Documents&#8221; folder.<\/li>\n<li>Drag and drop &#8220;Downloads&#8221; into the &#8220;Documents&#8221; folder.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenforums.com\/tutorials\/1066-taskbar-move-location-desktop-screen.html\">Move the Taskbar<\/a> to the left side of the screen. With a widescreen monitor (which any new computer will have), it makes much more sense to waste a small strip on the left than a strip that runs all the way across the bottom of the screen, making a narrow display area even narrower.<\/li>\n<li>Install <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classicshell.net\/\">Classic Shell<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Install <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/howto\/keyboard-ninja\/keyboard-ninja-toggle-hidden-files-with-a-shortcut-key-in-windows\/\">Toggle Hidden Files<\/a> and assign a hotkey to it (I use &#8220;Windows+h&#8221;).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenforums.com\/tutorials\/3265-drive-letters-show-before-after-name-computer.html\">Show drive letters before<\/a> the drive name.<\/li>\n<li>Install <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voidtools.com\/downloads\/\">Search Everything<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Install <a href=\"http:\/\/www.softpedia.com\/get\/System\/OS-Enhancements\/KeyTweak.shtml\">KeyTweak<\/a> and remap the Caps Lock key to Left Shift.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogsdna.com\/2173\/add-take-ownership-option-in-right-click-context-menu-of-windows-7.htm\">Add a Take Ownership context menu<\/a> to Windows Explorer.<\/li>\n<li>Install <a href=\"http:\/\/ditto-cp.sourceforge.net\/beta\/\">Ditto clipboard manager<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Install <a href=\"http:\/\/ivanheckman.com\/allsnap\/\">AllSnap<\/a> (the 64 bit version, if you are running 64-bit Windows). You must <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/howto\/windows-7\/disable-the-mouse-drag-window-arranging-feature-in-windows-7\/\">disable &#8220;Aero Snap&#8221;<\/a> (which is useless) first!<\/li>\n<li>If you use Photoshop, install <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastpictureviewer.com\/codecs\/\">FastPictureViewer Codec Pack<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenforums.com\/tutorials\/48123-user-folder-add-remove-navigation-pane.html\">Remove the user folder<\/a> from the Explorer navigation pane.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Now that you have done all of that, there are a few essential applications you should consider installing:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.7-zip.org\/\">7-Zip<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/notepad-plus.sourceforge.net\/uk\/site.htm\">Notepad++<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.com\/en-US\/firefox\/personal.html\">Firefox<\/a> You might also consider these addons:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/addon\/12276\">bug 489729<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/addon\/context-search\/\">Context Search<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/addon\/ie-tab-2-ff-36\/?src=search\">IE Tab V2<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lastpass.com\/\">Lastpass<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/tmp.garyr.net\/\">Tab Mix Plus<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/addon\/ublock-origin\/\">uBlock Origin<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/addon\/2410\">Xmarks<\/a> (I synchronize bookmarks, but not passwords, and I turn Xmarks&#8217; &#8220;Discovery&#8221; features off.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozillamessaging.com\/en-US\/thunderbird\/\">Thunderbird<\/a> with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/projects\/calendar\/lightning\/\">calendar plugin<\/a> (You might also consider linking Thunderbird&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/gcontactsync.mozdev.org\/index.html\">address book<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/thunderbird\/addon\/4631\">calendar<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackgate.net\/blog\/migrating-from-outlook-to-thunderbird-2\/\">Google<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irfanview.com\/\">Irfanview<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irfanview.com\/\">Irfanview plugins<\/a><\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2012-08-01T16:04:34+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openoffice.org\/\">OpenOffice<\/a><\/del> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libreoffice.org\/\">LibreOffice<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.avast.com\/index\"><del>Avast! Free Antivirus<\/del><\/a> (I eventually uninstalled this. It was just too much of a resource hog, even on a brand new computer.)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.copernic.com\/en\/products\/desktop-search\/home\/download.html\"><del datetime=\"2010-05-07T14:56:11+00:00\">Copernic Desktop Search<\/del><\/a> <del datetime=\"2010-05-07T14:56:11+00:00\">(I paid for the professional version. I think it&#8217;s worth it.)<\/del> (I eventually uninstalled this. It was just too much of a resource hog, even on a brand new computer.)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iobit.com\/iobitsmartdefrag.html\">SmartDefrag<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/dexpot.de\/index.php\">Dexpot<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk\/\">Bulk Rename Utility<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.proximasoftware.com\/fontexpert\/\">FontExpert<\/a> (It costs money, but if you work with fonts a great deal, it is worth it.) When you put fonts into groups, make sure you <strong>create shortcuts<\/strong>, rather than copying the font files.<\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2012-08-01T16:08:20+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peerblock.com\/\">PeerBlock<\/a><\/del> (Idon&#8217;t use this anymore.
