Note that it might be helpful for you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/software-download\/windows10\">download the Windows 10 installation media<\/a> yourself, rather than waiting for Microsoft to send it to you<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Re-install video drivers and mouse drivers<\/strong><br>I had weird problems until I did this. Make sure you get the newest drivers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fix10.isleaked.com\/\">Enable Privacy<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Turn on System Protection<\/strong>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open a File Explorer window<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Right-click This PC and choose Properties<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select System Protection in the left pane<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select C: drive in the dialog box that opens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the Configure button<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select &#8220;Turn on system protection&#8221; option<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set disk space usage to around 1.5 GB.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Move the Taskbar<\/strong><br>Move the Taskbar to the left side of the screen. With a widescreen monitor (which any new computer will have), it makes much more sense to waste a small strip on the left than a strip that runs all the way across the bottom of the screen, making a narrow display area even narrower.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Modify Start Menu<\/strong>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the Start Menu, right click each pane, and select &#8220;Unpin from Start&#8221; (optionally, keep the Weather pane, but open it up and set the correct location)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unpin the Edge and Store icons from the taskbar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Right-click the taskbar and hide the Search and Task View icons from the taskbar<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clean Up Programs<\/strong>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the Start Menu, click Settings &gt;&gt; System &gt;&gt; Apps &amp; Features<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sort by name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uninstall&#8230;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Get Office<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get Skype<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microsoft Solitaire Collection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Install <a href=\"http:\/\/www.softpedia.com\/get\/System\/OS-Enhancements\/KeyTweak.shtml\">KeyTweak<\/a><\/strong> and remap the Caps Lock key to Left Shift<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Install <a href=\"http:\/\/ditto-cp.sourceforge.net\/beta\/\">Ditto clipboard manager<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Install <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voidtools.com\/downloads\/\">Search Everything<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Customize Windows Explorer<\/strong>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Customize Quick Access Toolbar<br>This is a small drop-down arrow at the top of Windows Explorer.<br>Select &#8220;Show below the Ribbon&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Customize Options<br>Click &#8220;View&#8221; button on the Ribbon, click the &#8220;Options&#8221; button, and select &#8220;Change folder and search options&#8221;. I am only noting changes from the default settings.\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>General\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open File Explorer to: This PC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show recently used files in Quick Access: unchecked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show recently used folders in Quick Access: unchecked<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>View\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Always show menus: checked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Display the full path in the title bar: checked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hidden files and folders: Show hidden files, folders, and drives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hide empty drives: not checked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hide extensions for known file types: not checked (this is the most idiotic option ever)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hide folder merge conflicts: not checked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hide protected operating system files: not checked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restore previous folder windows at logon: checked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expand to open folder: checked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show libraries: checked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the &#8220;Apply To Folders&#8221; button, and click OK<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tenforums.com\/tutorials\/4222-libraries-navigation-pane-hide-show-windows-10-a.html\">Show Libraries in Navigation Pane<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogsdna.com\/2173\/add-take-ownership-option-in-right-click-context-menu-of-windows-7.htm\">Add a Take Ownership context menu<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tenforums.com\/tutorials\/4870-homegroup-navigation-pane-add-remove-windows-10-a.html\">Remove Homegroup<\/a> link from the Explorer navigation pane<\/span> (may cause a hard-to-fix <a href=\"https:\/\/social.technet.microsoft.com\/Forums\/en-US\/d676eae2-bad9-44e4-a2ea-3dd5a81d675d\/kb2911106-regression-bug-cannot-rename-any-folders-in-windows-explorer-after-kb2911106-patch?forum=w8itprogeneral\">file\/folder rename bug<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenforums.com\/tutorials\/48123-user-folder-add-remove-navigation-pane.html\">Remove the user folder<\/a> from the Explorer navigation pane.<\/span> (may cause a hard-to-fix <a href=\"https:\/\/social.technet.microsoft.com\/Forums\/en-US\/d676eae2-bad9-44e4-a2ea-3dd5a81d675d\/kb2911106-regression-bug-cannot-rename-any-folders-in-windows-explorer-after-kb2911106-patch?forum=w8itprogeneral\">file\/folder rename bug<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Install <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nurgo-software.com\/products\/aquasnap\">AquaSnap<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Install <a href=\"http:\/\/winaero.com\/download.php?view.1796\">Winaero Tweaker<\/a><\/strong><br>The settings below are only the changes from the default.\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Behavior\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Disable AeroShake: Checked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disable AeroSnap: Checked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disable App Lookup In Store: Checked<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>File Explorer\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Customize This PC Folders: remove all<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disable &#8220;- Shortcut&#8221; Text: checked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drive Letters: Drive Letters Before Labels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Install <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Open-Shell\/Open-Shell-Menu\">Open Shell Menu<\/a><\/strong><br>It gives you a simpler to use Start menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Install <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/pawelt\/stacky\">Stacky<\/a><\/strong><br>It lets you group pinned icons on the Windows 10 taskbar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you use Photoshop, <strong>install <a href=\"https:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/sagethumbs\/\">SageThumbs<\/a><\/strong><br>It&#8217;s an open source Windows shell extension allowing you to see thumbnails of Photoshop files.<!-- \nIf you use Photoshop, <strong>install <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastpictureviewer.com\/codecs\/\">FastPictureViewer Codec Pack<\/a><\/strong>\nIt costs money, but it's worth it if you use Photoshop. --><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/lifehacker.com\/how-to-completely-uninstall-onedrive-in-windows-10-1725363532\">Disable and remove OneDrive<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you use DropBox, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropboxforum.com\/hc\/en-us\/community\/posts\/203354419-How-does-one-remove-the-Dropbox-link-from-the-Navigation-Pane-om-Windows-10-\">remove DropBox<\/a> link from the Explorer navigation pane<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you use DropBox, <strong>pin the DropBox folder to Quick Access<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Install <a href=\"http:\/\/www.softwareok.com\/?Freeware\/Q-Dir\">Q-Dir<\/a><\/strong><br>Despite the changes I made above, I still found the default Windows File Explorer frustrating. I tried a number of alternate file managers, including <a href=\"https:\/\/explorerplusplus.com\/\">Explorer++<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/freecommander.com\/en\/summary\/\">FreeCommander<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xyplorer.com\/\">XYplorer<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.softwareok.com\/?Freeware\/Q-Dir\">Q-Dir<\/a> met my needs better than anything else I tried.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that you have done all of that, there are a few essential applications you should consider installing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.7-zip.org\/\">7-Zip<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk\/\">Bulk Rename Utility<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.com\/en-US\/firefox\/personal.html\">Firefox<\/a> You might also consider these addons:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Absolute Right Click And Copy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Context Search<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>F.B. Purity (and hide the Trending pane)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lastpass<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New Tab Override<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ReloadMatic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simple Tab Groups<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>uBlock Origin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Undo Closed Tabs Button<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/imageglass.org\/\">ImageGlass<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ninite.com\/updater\/\">Ninite Updater<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/notepad-plus.sourceforge.net\/uk\/site.htm\">Notepad++<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.putty.org\/\">Putty<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/puttysm.sourceforge.io\/\">Putty Session Manager<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.videolan.org\/vlc\/download-windows.html\">VLC media player<\/a> (see the note below about file associations)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/winscp.net\/eng\/index.php\">WinSCP<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These are notes for my own purposes, but they might be useful to others, as well.
