It was a full size 20 GB hard drive that connected to the &#8220;head unit&#8221; (the stereo in the dash board) via the interface that was originally intended for a trunk-mounted CD changer (basically a very long extension cord). Imagine that: 20 GB of music in a space the size of a large hardback book! Keep in mind that this was a year before the iPod was released: we are talking some cutting edge stuff here.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.blackgate.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/neo_35_mp3_carjukebox.jpg\" alt=\"Neo 35 mp3 car jukebox\" width=\"350\" height=\"238\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.blackgate.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/neo_35_mp3_carjukebox.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.blackgate.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/neo_35_mp3_carjukebox-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A couple of years later, I upgraded from that beast to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00028DJTY\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=B00028DJTY&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=rpglibrary&#038;linkId=AWSSYJMVMHUH62PW\">Creative Zen Touch<\/a> portable mp3 player, which held as much as the Neo did in a fraction of the size. I replaced the stereo with one that had an auxiliary jack in the back, and custom-wired a headphone jack into one of my blank dash buttons. As the years passed, I eventually upgraded to an 80 GB iPod Touch (running <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockbox.org\/\">Rockbox firmware<\/a> &#8212; I have no love for iTunes). 80 GB in a package the size of a pack of cigarettes? Astounding!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.blackgate.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2010-07-13_12-07-00_02.jpg\" alt=\"Tiburon dash 2010-07-13\" width=\"350\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.blackgate.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2010-07-13_12-07-00_02.jpg 1704w, https:\/\/www.blackgate.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2010-07-13_12-07-00_02-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.blackgate.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2010-07-13_12-07-00_02-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1704px) 100vw, 1704px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now it has come time to upgrade again. This time, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00TOVSFIU\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=B00TOVSFIU&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=rpglibrary&#038;linkId=QHF7CPKXVK2U4Q7J\">the stereo has USB ports<\/a> in the back that can support a standard thumb drive. I removed the headphone jack from the dash, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00XJDP12W\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=B00XJDP12W&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=rpglibrary&#038;linkId=HOCAGWOKAZHFOV4E\">installed USB ports in the ash tray<\/a> (which is normally closed). Into one of those USB ports, I now have a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B01BGTG2A0\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=B01BGTG2A0&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=rpglibrary&#038;linkId=HK5L3E5XGZLJD5W2\">128 GB flash drive<\/a>: six times as much music storage as the Neo 35, in a widget the size of a nickel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackgate.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-04-25-11.54.40.jpg\">hidden in my ash tray<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Freaking amazing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.blackgate.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016-04-25-11.29.34.jpg\" alt=\"Tiburon ash tray 2016-04-25\" width=\"350\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5382\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the first things I did when I bought my Hyundai Tiburon in 2003 was to replace the stereo and install an mp3 player in the trunk (mounted on the back of one of the back seats).
