{"id":594,"date":"2007-01-31T11:47:32","date_gmt":"2007-01-31T16:47:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.blackgate.net\/blog\/index.php\/sony-bmg-violated-federal-law\/"},"modified":"2007-01-31T11:47:32","modified_gmt":"2007-01-31T16:47:32","slug":"sony-bmg-violated-federal-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.blackgate.net\/blog\/sony-bmg-violated-federal-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Sony BMG violated Federal law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While Sony BMG already <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20051229\/0958217.shtml\">settled the class action lawsuit<\/a> against it for their rootkit malware that opened up security holes on computers that were difficult to fix and hidden in a way that made them difficult to find, there was also an investigation to see if the rootkits violated federal law &#8212; and as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackgate.net\/blog\/index.php\/sony-illegally-hacks-customers-pcs\/\">I have been saying since Day 1<\/a>, they did. The company has reached an agreement with the FTC, and unlike the typical agreement where a company &#8220;doesn&#8217;t admit guilt,&#8221; in this case <a href=\"http:\/\/www.internetnews.com\/bus-news\/article.php\/3656911\">Sony BMG clearly states that they violated federal law<\/a> with the rootkits, and will reimburse people up to $150 if their computers were damaged by the software.<\/p>\n<p>Why the hell aren&#8217;t these <a href=\"http:\/\/news.com.com\/2100-1001-944057.html\">people in jail<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/09\/13\/AR2005091301857.html\">barred from using computers<\/a> for years, and so on, like any other hacker? Because most hackers don&#8217;t have millions to spend on their defense, that&#8217;s why. If you think the law is applied equally to everyone, this is your wake-up call.
