In fact on Christmas Eve, the company sued <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.plaync.com\/cgi-bin\/Store.pl\">NCSoft<\/a>, for violating patent \u00e2\u20ac\u02dc690, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/patents?id=wv5-AAAAEBAJ&amp;dq=7,181,690\">a system and method for enabling users to interact in a virtual space<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>NCSoft\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s games, such as Dungeon Runners, Guild Wars and Lineage, are all said to violate the patent. And NCSoft is just the start. World.com\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s IP lawyers feel that they have a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153very robust patent,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.virtualworldsnews.com\/2008\/12\/worldscom-v-ncsoft-update.html\">reports Virtual Worlds News.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(from <a href=\"http:\/\/government.zdnet.com\/?p=4246\">Worlds.com patent litigation could ripple through virtual worlds<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/government.zdnet.com\/\">ZDnet<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Even if <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paulgraham.com\/softwarepatents.html\">patents on software<\/a> were not <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macworld.com\/article\/137757\/2008\/12\/previewlawsuit.html\">inherently absurd<\/a> (and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/technology\/2005\/jun\/20\/comment.comment\">they are<\/a>), this is a patent on something which had been widely implemented and had even appeared in movies <strong>decades<\/strong> before Worlds.com applied for their patent in 2000. Even EverQuest was using virtual avatars for a year prior to Worlds.com&#8217;s patent application. Surely the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uspto.gov\/\">USPTO<\/a> had heard of EverQuest?
